This is a very exciting workshop, artists who know Steven’s work realize how
important drawing is to him, his drawing is not to plan his paintings, and
it is an art form of its own. He draws seriously and frequently; his studio
is full of drawings that he takes to completion.
He believes drawing is the cornerstone of painting and sculpture, to quote
Steven “to copy what one sees within a specific moment is not truly seeing.
Seeing while drawing is the awareness and development of a whole experience
at once and its representation as a unified whole. Students must be aware of
the variety of changes and moments that influence their drawing over time.
The selective process that gives meaning and expression to a drawing
influences our skills as painters”.
During this course there will be lecture, demonstrations and critiques, he
will discuss: materials, craft, issues of light and shadow, form, reflective
properties of flesh and other aspects of drawing.
He will start with thinking about the skull as a form, in space and how it
operates in space and then proceed to development of the head, from the
inside out.
Later in the week he will discuss the figure, how to develop the drawing
with focus on movement, how form is developed to make it look alive.
