Painting the Head in Oil- March 22-24, 2013, 9:30AM- 4PM
This workshop will focus on painting from life in Oils. Charles Miano will illustrate a cohesive procedure designed to enhance the artist’s ability to understand color, light and form by working from direct observation of the portrait. Structure of the head will be considered in depth, as well as exercises designed to improve brushwork using a system of value.
Artists will have the opportunity to progress to a long pose portrait painting lasting 4 consecutive life sessions, using an impressionist palette. Attention will be given to the overall atmosphere and personality of the light key.
Some of the important skills and understanding required for a successful painting will be addressed during this workshop including values, edges, paint quality and composition. In addition, students will learn the importance of simplifying color masses to create harmony and perceiving beautiful color variation producing effects of realism and subtlety. There will be regular demonstrations and critiques throughout the course. This workshop is designed for artists of all levels.
