Illustrator, painter, and educator James Martin developed his distinctive romantic style over years of creative exploration. After graduating in Illustration from The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Martin began his career as a storyboard and poster sketch artist alongside comic book legend Neal Adams. Continuing as a freelance creator in the Los Angeles area, his clients included studio giants Universal Pictures and Paramount Pictures, toy company Mattel, and notable individuals such as Spike Lee, Steven Spielberg, and James Cameron. Working as a visual developer for Walt Disney Feature Animation and Dreamworks Animation, Martin painted backgrounds for classic animated favorites including Hercules, Tarzan, and How to Train your Dragon.
Throughout his professional life, Martin took time to continue his education and studied extensively alongside artists such as Fred Fixler, Steve Huston, Burne Hogarth, and Dan McCaw. Inspired by rhythm and beauty, Martin is noted for his magnetic figurative work which includes his signature tumbling tresses, soulful eyes, and rich drapery. Having taught and designed graduate-level courses around the country, Martin now instructs in Illustration at the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota. Still prolifically creating personal work, Martin recently published Muse, a collection of fine art illustrations that celebrate the female form.
