Born in Guangzhou, China in 1952, Huihan completed his formal art training at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art with a BFA in 1975. He taught in the art school of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art between 1979-1987. Huihan was a candidate and was accepted by the Graduate School of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art in 1985. He went to the United States to further his study in 1987 and graduated from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco with an MFA in 1993. Huihan is a Master Signature Member of Oil Painters of America, an Artist Signature Member of California Art Club, and is the Graduate School Advisor of the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
Huihan was influenced by the 19th century academics from both the French and Russian schools who brought their ideas to the China art schools in the 50s. He has high regard for that group of Naturalists who believe in academic tradition and continue to portray scenes from ordinary life in the late 19th century. This inspiration has taken him on many trips to different regions in the world. He uses his paintings as a cultural bridge to share joyful moments and compassion with others.
Huihan’s paintings can be considered impressionistic realism. He uses a combination of field studies and photographic reference to focus on composition, color, design, accuracy in detail, spontaneous brushstrokes and texture. In his figure painting, he pays close attention on the characteristics of people, their gestures and the atmosphere in order to suggest the hidden meanings of the scene.
When he was in China, he participated in many exhibitions, both regionally and nationally. Huihan has been participating in many national shows and invitational exhibitions in the U.S. During the last twenty years, his paintings have won many awards such as, “Best of Show in Painting-John Scott People’s Choice Award,” in Western Rendezvous of Art; “Gold Medal for Best Painting” in California Art Club’s 92nd Annual Juried Exhibition; Gold Medal for the Master Signature Member at the Oil Painters of America National Show; as well as the Members’ Choice Award for The Master Signature Division in the Oil Painters of America National Exhibition. Since 1997, Huihan’s work has been featured in articles by numerous national magazines, such as Art of The West magazine; Southwest Art magazine; The International Artists magazine; The Artist’ Magazine and Western Architecture & Art magazine.
